Looking for the Right Maria Krocher Priester

I have been looking through Ancestry’s free 15 days, though it is only certain records they are making the 1920 US Federal Census available.

So I decided to look for my great-grandmother Maria Krocher Priester, though I know most of the information I thought I would just type in her name for the search, it yielded 240 results.

Skimming through them I am looking for any that live in Michigan and or in and around Detroit. I always get the same results. Which is Maria Priester as a daughter, but it was crossed out as the wife.

Both Maria Krocher Priester and her daughter also should be listed at this address in 1920 but the mother is written in then crossed out and Marie Priester (daughter) is written in with the right birth year and age.

Anton Priester has the wrong year and age written 1908 and 12 years which should be 1904 and 16 years born in Hungary, and Michael Priester should be 1910 and 9 years at the time of the census, while Elizabeth Priester birth year of 1914 and age 5 is correct.

The other question is who is Joesph Priester, father age 35 and immigrated in 1905. Since the children’s father, Anton Priester died in 25 December 1919, so would not be alive for the census.

So my two big questions are

Where is Maria Kocher Priester the mother?

Who is Joesph Priester?

I know that the answers are out there as are the missed placed photographs from the family.

Anyone who might have information or and idea please do let me know as it is a piece of the research I would like to fill in.

Searching Records

I see that Ancestry is giving out free searches through their site, it is only a different set of records they add each day but hey free searching is free searching.

I am hoping that I can get on and look through the site to see what they have been adding each day.

Looking for Records

I was with my wife the other night, looking on-line for SSDI, Social Security Death Index the interestingly annoying problem was that all the web-sites wanted us to pay, sign-up or in some way or anther give out information to get what is suppose to be free public knowledge.

I am thankful to site that have scanned in the census, and other records for people to search, but to say that they are then copyrighted, in my book is wrong.

It is a public document, after it is scanned there is no altering, or creative twist put to these scans that in one way or another make them an original work.

So saying they are copyrighted is misleading.

Enough of my ranting, I am trying to make available records about Priester to any member of the Priester’s who is trying to find out information. It is a slow task of lots and lots of records.

In the mean time if you have a question or query about a Priester, or Priester Family email me at matthew.priester@priesterfamilytree.com and I’ll answer your question best that I can.

I just spent time looking at all the Priester stuff on the web, most of it old links to genealogy sites. I see I have my work cut out for me.

Had to Take a Break

I have had to take a break from research and now Ancestry.com for the past few months because I have gotten married to a beautiful woman. I has been wonderful and a great addition and complement to my life.

I have enough research to be adding to here for a few months. I also need to see about getting some microfiche reels from the Family Search Center in Utah to finish my project from Hungary.

Lost Photographs and the Importance of Saving Them

I was just told by a family member that photographs my grandfather had in a suitcase before he died have more than likely been throw away.

Sad they were what he had cherished and pretty much all his possession at the end. To let go of Family History like that without the thought of preservation is sad.

I am still hopeful that one day they will turn up, but I can only be mad at myself for not being more family oriented and going to see my grandfather.

I know it is sad that there are things and question I wish to ask of him yet will no longer be able to ask him.

I can hope that for some reason somewhere there are those picture, and maybe more lying around and will find there way back.

If there is anyone out there who doesn’t, feel the need to save old family photographs, or old Priester family photographs please let me know, email me, call me, something and I will take them off your hands.

Scan them and put them on the web so everybody can share and enjoy who wants too.

Too much has been lost, throw away or simple just left. Though I am not concerned about skeletons in my families closet, I do care about the stories and would like to get as many as I can out there, for people to see and read.

Sharing…

Time to move forward on the Priesters

I have had a lot of changes in the past couple of months, and have not been working on the family history.

I am not back after having gotten married to a good friends sister from junior high and high school.

I have to admit it has been awesome, we are one in the same. If you would like to catch up visit matthewpriester.com

Since the last time I have been able to get marriage and birth certificates from Hungary, which I will add when I can get to my computer.

I had got them from the Genealogical center in Salt Lake City, they are on microfiche and are really pretty clear. I need to get them ordered and sent out to Asheville so I can access them easier and get them out to everyone.

They are a gold mine of information from Hergaflava, Hungary. I also need to find out if there was ever information copied from Mör, Hungary. As that is where they came from before herecgflava

Trip to Grandin, Budapest and Doniphan Missouri

A family get together down in Doniphan, Missouri.

4 cousins all descendent’s of Anton Priester and Anna Neumann Priester children. I happen to be from the oldest son Anton, Dawn is from the second oldest Anna and David and Bob and from the next to the last child Theresa.

Up to this point none of us had all gotten together, so the day was filled with excitement, hoping to find the farms of our Grandparents. In my case it is the Great Great Grandparents in the case of the other 3 it is just Great Grandparents.

Before we keep going let me put up the Google map and the Platt map, with the Google map I added lines to help better figure out where I am searching and what I am eliminating

Hungarian Revolution

Earlier today I finished a book by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, James A Michener, “The Bridge at Andau” written in 1956, it is about the Hungarian Revolution and eye-witness accounts told by Michener.

Though I wasn’t even born then, I remember little, if any of what was taught to me in school of this monumental event in history.

People of any county, if you want to understand what is going on in Egypt, Libya and in other parts of the world, READ THIS BOOK.

I was shocked at the accounts, but more than that the way he described how the people felt, and why they especially the young people many not over the age of 20 stood up to the Soviet Union and changed the face of Communism forever.

Time Magazine, recognized what these young individuals accomplished and made the Hungarian Freedom Fighters their “Man of the Year,” which came out 07 January 1957. Which I am happily surprised.

Hungarian Freedom Fighters

The book “The Bridge at Andau” is well worth the time if you can find a good copy to read, you might have to check a few used bookstores. I found a 1957 paperback for $2.00 bucks and original 1st edition hard copies go from $75 -$100, depending on the condition. But unless you are into collectors editions opt for the paperback.

Though this pertains to the other side of my family, it is still relevant here. An cousin wrote 4 books they are nicely done, but a bit expensive. She could have cut it down to 3 had there not been 1 inch margins on both sides.

The margins coupled with the way things were written, for me is old school and I don’t understand it much. It reminds me when my Mom was working on the family tree 30 years ago or the books I have found in the used book stores.

I only have 3 issues, 2 with the book and 1 with my cousin.

1st the one with the cousin, first she sends the first 3 volumes to my old address in California, and then tells me if they are not forwarded then we have a problem. Problem was she didn’t insure them or put a tracking number on them. $80 a piece and she throws them into a standard envelope with little packing.

Really, they are that valuable and no insurance and its my problem that they are sitting in Burlingame. Can you say cheap, sounds to me that she is trying to save just a few pennies at others expense. The last volume she had for 20 days, knowing that others like me had already paid for it, I had to beg for it and lie saying I was going to my mothers house and wanted to take it with me. It was the only way I got it.

Again, after the first fiasco, she sends the book the exact same way with no insurance or tracking in a standard envelope. Amazing not a very good business woman.

With the book itself the publishers of the book wrote in the beginning…

All rights reserved. No part of this book, or portions thereof, may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form, or be reproduced by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording or otherwise, without permission in writing from the publisher.

I have big problems with this statement, because more than 60% of this book is public records, i.e., census records, birth and marriage certificates and so forth. You can’t copy write public records.

Since I have a good 30% of this family tree information before she wrote the book am I now in violation of copy right laws, I do not think so.

The other problem I have with the book, is the lack of a editor. I guess that really isn’t the book fault but the writer and publisher and the lack of fact checking.

You can’t use birth year estimated or marriage year estimated as a source! Really, under that premise I could make up my whole history and just estimate it all as a source.

I know I am new at this family history and have a lot to learn, and will make mistakes I just hope that I will always have an open mind when it comes to suggestions and ideals.
